A Journey Through Nature

17 February 2025

Sue and Gary Vogt are lifelong wanderers, drawn to the beauty of the untamed world. Their journey began in 1974, cradling their five-month-old daughter in a camera bag as they explored the best of nature.

Meet Sue & Gary Vogt

No. of years camping:
Too many to count

The first time we went camping as a couple was…
When our oldest daughter was only 5 months old – we camped in Wilpena Pound in October 1974, and we hiked with her in a camera bag.

First thing you do once you’ve set up ‘camp’?
We like to go for a hike and explore.
Sometimes (we) like to introduce (ourselves) to the next door neighbour.

The last time we followed our wanderers we ended up…
At Pajinka. We wandered up the Great Dividing Range to the tip of Australia and were amazed by the native rainforest.

If I had to pick one crazy camping story it would be the time I wandered to…
Karumba, each morning the resident Brolgas visited our campsite for a drink of water.

The best thing about camping is…
Waking up early to birdsong.

Our must-have gear when hitting the road include…
A Bull dog clip (it’s good for pretty much everything)
A pair of good sunglasses
Insect repellent and a fly net

The top three road trips on our wanderer’s bucket list are…
Snorkelling and crayfishing around the Abrolhos Islands
Birdwatching and hiking at Currawinya National Park and surrounds
Returning to the Gawler Ranges to explore the hiltaba granite area and see the native wild flowers.

To my fellow wanderers out there, you absolutely, definitely have to visit…
Arkaroola – the geological features, the fossils, waterholes and lookouts are amazing.
