Great outdoors; Great encounters

From waking up in Ireland to a group of Star Wars wannabes to bumping into acclaimed landscape photographer George Kilbus, wandering has taken Justin Broughton all over the world. Here, he shares the best bits of his camping trips.

Meet Justin

No. of years camping:
20

The first time I went camping was…
On a six-week long family holiday to Western Australia. We had a camper trailer and travelled from caravan park to caravan park all the way to Perth. I was always more than happy living out of the trailer.

First thing you do once you’ve set up ‘camp’ ?
Usually I’ll go for a swim, if there is water. If not, cards or ball games are usually the first thing on my mind.

The last time I followed my wanderer I ended up…
Stopping off to camp a couple nights in the Grampians at Lake Lonsdale on our way to Melbourne. A bit of a hidden gem!

If I had to pick one crazy camping story it would be the time …
The West coast of Ireland. When camping near Dingle, we awoke to swathes of people dressed in Star Wars costumes, roleplaying near the sea cliffs. We later learned that it was the 4th of May, and that was a location where they filmed (a) scene in a Star Wars movie. We also met acclaimed landscape photographer George Kilbus who was longboard-skateboarding the grassy hills with his son.

The best thing about camping is…
Switching off, and bonding with others over having less. Finding creative ways to entertain yourself.

My must-have gear when hitting the road include…
Camera, swag, gas cooker.

The top three road trips on my wanderer’s bucket list are…
Tassie, Iceland, Portugal.

To my fellow wanderers out there, you absolutely, definitely have to visit…
Arkaroola, South Australia.
